Hartlepool Freemasons Secure £1,200 for Young Onset Dementia Support Group

A local Hartlepool support group for people living with young onset dementia has received £1,200 of funding thanks to the combined efforts of Clarence Lodge, the Hartlepool Masonic Benevolent Association (HMBA), and Durham Freemasons Charity.

The journey began when Worshipful Brother Brian Bullock of Clarence Lodge No. 2462 met members of the group whilst carrying out his duties as a celebrant. Inspired by the dedication of the volunteers and the positive difference they were making in the lives of people affected by young onset dementia, Brian approached his Lodge to see if support could be offered.

Clarence Lodge immediately agreed to make a charitable donation of £200 to help the group continue its important work.

The application was then submitted to the Hartlepool Masonic Benevolent Association (HMBA), the charity that supports local good causes on behalf of Freemasonry in Hartlepool. Recognising the value of the group’s work within the community, the HMBA Committee unanimously agreed to contribute a further £400, bringing the total local support to £600.

As part of its commitment to maximising the impact of charitable giving, HMBA then submitted an application to Durham Freemasons Charity for match funding. Following consideration at their February meeting, Durham Freemasons Charity approved a further £600 grant, doubling the funding available and bringing the total support to an impressive £1,200.

Representatives from Clarence Lodge, HMBA and Durham Freemasons Charity later met with members of the group to present the cheque and celebrate the award.

Supporting People Living with Young Onset Dementia

The group was originally founded by Colin Williamson and John Kearney, both of whom were diagnosed with young onset dementia. After meeting through The Bridge Dementia Advisory Service in Hartlepool, they recognised the importance of creating a dedicated support network for others facing similar challenges.

Led today by Lynn Kearney, the group has continued to grow and now meets every Thursday at Hartlepool United Football Club. Members regularly support one another through friendship, shared experiences, social activities and community engagement.

The funding will help provide a wide range of activities and outings, including visits to museums, gardens, bowling venues, historical attractions, community centres and places of local interest. These activities play an important role in reducing isolation, promoting wellbeing and helping members maintain social connections.

As the group continues to expand, financial support is essential to ensure activities remain accessible to those living with young onset dementia, together with their families and carers.

How HMBA Supports Local Community Groups

This award perfectly demonstrates how Freemasonry in Hartlepool supports local causes.

Many applications begin with a local Freemason or Lodge identifying a need within the community. HMBA then reviews applications and, where possible, provides financial support directly. For projects that meet additional criteria, HMBA can also apply for further funding from Durham Freemasons Charity, helping local organisations access even greater levels of support.

If your community group, charity, organisation or project is making a positive difference in Hartlepool and could benefit from financial assistance, we would be delighted to hear from you.

Applications for support can be submitted online through the HMBA website.

Together, we can continue supporting the individuals, groups and organisations that make Hartlepool a stronger and more caring community.
